NetBird's February Newsletter

Custom DNS Zones, Apple TV, Docker, Remote Debug, TrueNAS App

Hello NetBird Community!

We’re back with our monthly newsletter. Here are some updates from the last month to keep you up to date.

Android TV and Apple TV added to NetBird

These clients have been highly requested, and the use case makes sense: TV boxes are always-on (NetBird works in sleep mode), low-power, and already sitting in friends’ or family members’ homes. That makes them great candidates for routing peers or exit nodes.

Design-wise, the TV clients behave like any other NetBird peer:

  • Full routing / exit node support
  • All configuration handled centrally in the Dashboard
  • No need to touch the TV again after the initial login

We sanity-tested this with the ultimate benchmark — letting our DevRel Ashley’s (100% real) grandma access Jellyfin.
Watch the video to see how that went.

The TV clients are currently beta, so feedback is very welcome (issues on the iOS / Android repositories are ideal).

Both clients and the management server are fully open source (GPLv3), as usual.

Custom DNS Zones (v0.63)

NetBird v0.63 introduces Custom DNS Zones for private network resolution. Key features include:

  • Create internal DNS zones (e.g. ) directly in the Dashboard — no external DNS servers required
  • Add A, AAAA, and CNAME records managed through NetBird
  • Group-based distribution — assign zones to specific peer groups
  • Search domain support for short-name resolution (e.g. instead of )
  • Integration with routed networks — map friendly DNS names to private IPs behind routing peers
  • Local resolution on each peer with automatic propagation when group membership changes

Dive into Docker with us

Docker is a fundamental tool whether you’re building a homelab or deploying services for your organization.

In this beginner’s guide, we cover core fundamentals to help you get started.

TrueNAS App Store Integration

The NetBird Client is now available in the TrueNAS Apps Market (Community catalog). This integration allows TrueNAS users to:

  • Deploy NetBird Client directly from the TrueNAS interface (version 0.64.5)
  • Connect TrueNAS systems to secure WireGuard-based overlay networks with SSO, MFA, and granular access controls
  • Configure via an easy setup wizard with hostname, setup key, and optional self-hosted management URL
  • Run in either kernel or userspace mode
  • Leverage host networking for seamless integration with TrueNAS systems

We’ll be at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe - Amsterdam, March

If you need another reason to visit Amsterdam this year, we’ve got one.

The NetBird team will be at booth 951 at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe.
Meet the team behind the product and pick up some amazing NetBird merch while you’re there.

We hope to see many of you in person.

That’s it for this month.

– Team NetBird
